Art & Design

A Level Art and Design at Reigate Grammar School provides the students with the opportunity to explore rich and diverse aspects of Art and Design.

The students are encouraged to explore a broad range of materials, techniques and processes, to investigate ideas in depth and push the boundaries of Art and Design.

It is vital that students explore their ideas from their own personal experiences, but also as a reflection of what is happening in contemporary art and from art history as a whole. We believe in the art department that Gallery and Site visits are an essential part of the students experience and education.

The students in the art department have the opportunity to work with an exciting range of disciplines, from painting and drawing, to all areas of print making, sculpture and installation, also photography and textiles.

The art department boasts fantastic resources and facilities. We have a sixth form studio for the students to work in, in their free lessons and after school, which is actively encouraged as this aids the students in becoming independent learners.

The students at Reigate Grammar also benefit from the opportunity to do life drawing every week, we believe that this is an intrinsic part of the course which gives the students an amazing depth and knowledge of drawing.

The course structure is as follows:

The AS course includes one coursework unit and one externally set assignment. The course work unit enables the students to explore their ideas in depth and create a rich portfolio of work.

The externally set assignment follows a similar structure to the GCSE where the students are given a theme and they explore their own ideas and produce a final outcome/s in controlled conditions.

The AS course has, again one coursework unit. This however has a written element, the students have to produce a contextual study consisting of 3000 words, and a practical unit of work.

This course work unit comes from personal starting points, the students are encouraged to choose a starting point of personal interest and explore their ideas in depth to create innovative and exciting work.

The externally set assignment is similar to the AS, where the students are given a theme, explore ideas and produce final outcome/s, under timed, controlled conditions.
