Activities

Members of the Sixth Form take a leading role in all activities at Reigate Grammar School: drama productions, CCF, Community Service initiatives, concerts, sport, chess, Model United Nations, Duke of Edinburgh expeditions, and trips both at home and abroad – the list of activities available seems endless. The Sixth Form at RGS opens up a new world of opportunities outside the classroom, whatever your interests. All Sixth Form students are encouraged to take part in at least one activity, and many are involved in a whole range.

Drama
There are several drama productions each year ranging from small studio-based plays, often directed by Sixth Form students, to major productions in the Concert Hall with a cast of over 100. Students also have the opportunity to be involved behind the scenes, in charge of lighting, costumes, make-up or as Assistant Stage Managers. Theatre visits to London are frequent, and students studying drama can also attend the National Student Drama Festival each Easter.

Music
We produce a large number of concerts throughout the academic year, from informal concerts after school to our annual events at the Harlequin Theatre and the Dorking Halls. The purpose-built Music School has first class facilities including a recital room and music technology suite. All styles of music are encouraged and the school has two Orchestras, four Choirs, a Swing Band, several Ensembles, Rock Bands and many Chamber Groups as well as a Music Technology club.

Sport
If sport is your passion, then the Sixth Form at RGS offers opportunities for excellence. For boys, the major sports are rugby, hockey, football and cricket, while for girls the options include hockey, netball and rounders. Others sports on offer include swimming, tennis, golf, squash, and athletics.  Our facilities are excellent: 32 acres of playing fields two miles away at our Hartswood sports ground include an all-weather pitch, outdoor cricket nets, and a golf course. The main school site also houses a large sports hall, netball/tennis courts, and new heated indoor swimming pool. Major sports tours are a frequent feature, with destinations including South Africa, Canada and the West Indies.

Duke of Edinburgh Award
The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award scheme is an extremely popular option and many students progress to Silver or Gold awards during their time in the Sixth Form. Expeditions are to South Wales, Dartmoor or the Yorkshire Dales, and Gold Award students also help Broze students with their planning and expeditions.

Combined Cadet Force
The CCF is well-established with dedicated pupils in the Army Section, the Royal Air Force Section and the Royal Navy Section. Sixth Form students take a leading role in all three sections, acting as senior cadets and often teaching younger cadets. This provides excellent leadership skills for the future. A variety of camps, including Adventure Training, are available in school holidays. In recent years, several RGS Sixth formers have won Army Scholarships, and many cadets have learned to fly through the RAF section.

Model United Nations
RGS has a thriving MUN, which meets weekly to debate or plan attendance at one of the many MUN conferences we attend each year. In addition, most years we organise our own conference at Reigate, where students have the chance to chair and manage the debates. Students throughout the school are involved, led by Sixth formers.

Community Service
Large numbers of Sixth formers volunteer to help with our community service programme, many of them through the ‘Live at Home’ scheme, which involves weekly visits to local elderly residents, or by helping in local primary schools. Others have undertaken short projects over the holidays or at weekends, varying from fundraising at music festivals, conservation projects and helping to run play schemes at the YMCA.  Each year we also host an Old Folks’ Christmas Party, inviting local elderly residents to enjoy tea and some musical and dramatic entertainment.
