Orchestras and Bands

Symphony Orchestra is our largest orchestra and meets on Fridays at 4.00 until 5.30 in the Recital Room. It is open to string and brass players who are at least Grade 5 standard, and advanced woodwind players and percussionists. RGSSO performs major symphonic works at concerts throughout the year, including the Harlequin and Dorking Halls concerts. The orchestra toured the Lake Geneva region in the Summer of 2010.

Concert Band is a large and versatile group for all wind, brass and percussion players of Grade 4-5 standard and up. It meets on Fridays at 1.25 in the Recital Room and plays at all the major concerts of the year, including at the Harlequin and Dorking Halls. Its repertoire ranges from West End and Broadway to marches and symphonic music. In 2008 Concert Band toured the Mosel region of Germany.

RGS Chamber Orchestra was formed in 2009 and is a small, auditioned orchestra which plays more challenging repertoire. Members of RGSCO played for the school production of Nicholas Nickelby in December 2010, and the orchestra goes to Bryanston for a residential course each Easter.

Concert Band 2, known affectionately as ‘CB2’ is for wind, brass and percussion players of about Grade 2-4 standard and meets on Mondays at 4.00 until 4.45 in the Recital Room. CB2 performs at all the major orchestral concerts and is a great stepping stone to the bigger Concert Band.

Intermediate String Orchestra is a group for string players of approximately Grade 2-5 standard, who are either aspiring or relatively new members of Symphony Orchestra. It meets on Mondays at 4.00 until 4.45 in M3. ISO and CB2 often combine to make an intermediate orchestra.
