Jazz and Rock Bands

Swing Band

The legendary RGS Swing Band performs at many school events throughout the year, and has recently toured to Lake Garda and played in venues all over Surrey, including a regular slot at Dorking Halls and frequent tours of primary and preparatory schools. The band is also experienced at providing the music for functions. The band’s Summer Serenade is one of the highlights of the Summer Festival. To join Swing Band, you need to be a saxophone, trumpet or trombone player of at least Grade 6 standard, and will need to audition. There are also limited openings for advanced piano, bass and drum kit players. Swing Band meets to rehearse on Wednesdays at 4.00 in the Recital Room.

Jazz Ensembles

Other students interested in playing in small jazz groups should speak with a member of the music staff, as we are always keen to set new groups up.

RGS Unplugged

Twice a year we hold ‘RGS Unplugged’. Based on the MTV shows of the same name, these concerts provide an opportunity for students to perform rock and pop music in an intimate setting, either as soloists or as part of a band. The catch is - no amplified instruments! Mr Lobb organises these extremely popular events and more details can be obtained from him.

Rock Bands

There are a lot of student bands at RGS, and our Percussion Room, which is sound-proof, is available for rehearsals (see Mr Foster for details). If you want to form, or join a band, see Mr Foster who will try to give you help to realise your dreams!
