Choirs and other singing groups
If you like to sing, there’s a choir for you!
RGS Singers
This is a choir for anyone from Third Form to Seventh Form, male or female. RGS Singers performs music of all styles, and there is no audition to get in - just turn up! Every year, RGS Singers performs at major concerts including the Carols by Candlelight Service and the Dorking Halls concert. It also tours abroad every two years, with recent destinations including Vienna (twice - see right) and Lake Garda. RGS Singers performed in Rome in July 2011, and will be undertaking a major tour in 2013. Rehearsals are on Tuesdays at 1.30 in the Recital Room.
Polyphony
This is our senior Chamber Choir, and entry is by audition. Polyphony has sung Evensong at Southwark and Guildford Cathedrals, and will be visiting Chichester for the first time in 2011. It also combines with the choir of Reigate St. Mary’s for Evensong each summer. Polyphony sings mainly sacred choral music, often unaccompanied, and gives concerts in churches and cathedrals all around the South East. Polyphony, like RGS singers, has performed in prestigious venues all around Europe including St. Peter’s in Rome, and St. Paul’s in London. Rehearsals are on Mondays at 1.30 in the Recital Room.
Junior Voices
This lively choir is open to any boys and girls in the First and Second Form. It is divided up into JGV (for girls) and JBV (for boys) and sings a mixture of lively modern and traditional music, always playing a major part in school concerts and carol services. Junior Voices meets on Wednesdays at 1.30 in the Music School.
Cantata Choir
The RGS Cantata Choir, an amalgamation of the former Community Choir and Parents’ and Friends’ Music Society, came into existence in October 2012. It is a choir for parents, staff, students and friends of RGS, and will perform three times a year - concerts in October and May, and a Carol Service in aid of the Orpheus Trust in December. Anyone can join this choir, and more information can be obtained from Mr Rushby in the Music Department.
RGS Barbershop/Acabelles
These a cappella groups are student-run and have enjoyed massive success recently, in the ‘Surrey’s Got Talent’ competition in 2011 and the Voice Festival competition in 2012.
